Life Force North East Guidance

The North East Veterans Network is made up of 52 organisations from the Region, all of which provide specific services to Veterans and their families. It is founded on the recognition that these needs are different in certain respects to those of other groups in society. Veterans in this context are defined as people who have spent a proportion of their lives serving their country in the Armed Forces as a regular or reserve.

Organisations involved in the Network are diverse in their nature and include military organisations, statutory agencies, Services charities and third sector organisations.

Our common aim is to enable Veterans and their families to achieve and sustain economic and social inclusion. In order to further that aim the Network has attempted to address three major issues:

  • Communication – between organisations so that we don’t work in isolation and understand what is available to Veterans in the Region.
  • Partnership – by helping organisations to work together to make use of the limited resources available and to help Veterans to progress between organisations.
  • Access – to Services through raising awareness of their availability and simplifying the route that needs to be taken to contact the organisations. A Network Directory and Website have been constructed to achieve this.

The organisations involved in the Network address a number of key themes that illustrate the barriers that some Veterans and their families can be faced with:

  • General advice and guidance – including debt, legal and financial issues.
  • A history of alcohol/drug abuse.
  • Employment support and training.
  • A history of offending behaviour.
  • Family support.
  • Housing and homelessness.
  • Health and mental health issues.

The great majority of Veterans make a successful transition to civilian life, but a small minority will, over time, experience issues that require specific support.

Membership is free of charge, as is attendance at the quarterly Network meetings and inclusion on the Directory.
